I'll be honest, I always avoided this day like the plague. It too tangibly reminded me that I was different than the girls and boys who made Father's Day crafts at school and ran to the car to show them to their Dad. I was reminded of the pain and suffering and questioning of where the hell my Dad was.
Today, in the mingling of grief and joy, I will celebrate those dads who are true heroes to their kids. Those who hold hands, play at the drop of a hat, and inspire their kids. Thanks be to God for you, who redeem my own father experience and show me a new way.
Happy Father's Day.
